Music Literacy: It's Critical!

Dr. Carol Krueger

June 14 - 18, 2021

Far too often students are musically illiterate when they enter the rehearsal setting and directors aren’t sure how to develop elementary skills in younger and older singers. Working from the premise that students learn musical skills in the same order as they do language skills, participants will explore how we ‘learn’ music through hearing and imitating patterns before reading (translating notation into sound) and writing (translating sound into notation).

Dr. Jonathan Pilkington is a voice teacher with extensive experience both as a professional soloist and as a professional choral singer. It's All Diction to Me!

Dr. Jonathan Pilkington

July 19 - 23, 2021

Building on Pilkington’s pedagogy course, a thorough understanding of diction can be intertwined with effective pedagogy and beautiful, expressive singing. Someone once said, “Consonants carry the message, and vowels carry the emotion.” This workshop will cover an overview of the International Phonetic Alphabet, how diction and pedagogy work together (articulators & formants), as well as rules and resources for commonly sung languages (English, Italian, French & German).
